What's Everyone Talking, UP Joseph Boakai Names Senator Jeremiah Koung as his Running Mate:

What’s Everyone talking the recent announcement of Joseph Boakai, the Unity Party's standard-bearer, naming Senator Jeremiah Koung as his running mate in the upcoming October 2023 elections has left some key political allies disappointed. Despite the announcement being eagerly anticipated, Boakai's choice of running mate does not seem to be going down well with some of his long-standing political allies, such as Benoni Urey of the All-Liberian Party, Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, and Henry Costa.

The situation has become contentious, as Boakai's decision to select Koung as his running mate could come at a significant political cost. Some political analysts speculate that Senator Prince Johnson, who holds significant sway in Nimba County, orchestrated Koung's nomination as the Vice-Presidential candidate for Boakai, in a bid to retain his political relevance and influence in the country's governance. Johnson's prior endorsement of Koung helped him secure a seat in the House of Representatives and subsequently the Liberian Senate.

It is worth noting that Senator Johnson is a former warlord who killed ex-president Samuel K. Doe in 1990. Some significant political allies were disappointed by Joseph Boakai's recent announcement that Senator Jeremiah Koung would serve as his running mate in the upcoming elections in October 2023. Boakai is the leader of the Unity Party. Although the announcement was eagerly anticipated, some of Boakai's longtime political allies, including Henry Costa, Benoni Urey of the All-Liberian Party, and Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, do not appear to be pleased with his choice of running mate.

The choice of Koung as Boakai's running mate has raised controversy since it may have serious political repercussions. To maintain his political relevance, some political experts believe that Senator Prince Johnson, who has major influence in Nimba County, arranged Koung's nomination as the Vice-Presidential candidate for Boakai. Moreover, Johnson has been hit with sanctions by the U.S. Department of Treasury under the Global Magnitsky Act, which authorizes the U.S. government to sanction those it sees as human rights offenders, freeze their assets, and ban them from entering the U.S. The sanctions were imposed on Senator Johnson due to allegations of "pay-for-play" schemes, where he allegedly received large sums of money from government ministries and organizations for his personal benefit.

Despite the potential backlash, Boakai remains resolute in his decision. He believes that naming Koung as his running mate is his surest way to win the election, and he is prepared to "dance with the devil" to make that happen. However, his decision could have significant implications for the future of Liberia's political landscape, as key political allies may withdraw their support for his candidacy.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates on this developing story.
