Liberia and Canada Renew Economic Cooperation

On May 28, 2024, a significant bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Annual Board Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya. Hon. Boima S. Kamara, Liberia’s Minister of Finance and Development Planning, and H.E. Mr. Ben Marc Diendere, Canadian Ambassador to the African Union, discussed ways to deepen the long-standing economic and diplomatic relationship between their countries.

Key Areas of Cooperation:

  1. Human Capital Development: Emphasizing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for youth empowerment.
  2. SMEs Development: Supporting small and medium enterprises to drive economic growth.
  3. Climate Resilience and Food Security: Investing in sustainable agricultural practices and agribusiness.
  4. Private Sector Development: Boosting investment in mining, carbon markets, and infrastructure.

Ambassador Diendere highlighted Canada's commitment to financing the AfDB and supporting Africa's economic expansion through agriculture and value chains. He also advised caution in seabed mineral resources negotiations.

Minister Kamara reiterated President Boakai’s vision for Liberia’s economic expansion, particularly in agriculture and infrastructure, and called for enhanced cooperation with Canada. He urged G-7 nations to increase private sector financing for low-income countries and advocated for improved financing architectures to foster inclusive and sustainable growth in developing countries.

This renewed cooperation aims to mobilize financial support for President Boakai’s ARREST agenda, promising a brighter economic future for Liberia.
